Roman Blinds – Hand-Made or Machine Made?

Also, Bonded Interlining or Separate Interlining?

Hand-Made or Machine Made?

With a machine made blind, the rod pockets are attached through to the face fabric with a line of machine stitching; this means that the line of stitching is visible on the front of the blind. The Velcro is also machine stitched, so there are another two lines of stitching across the front of the blind at the top securing the velcro on the back. The machine stitching will be more visible on a blind made with a plain face fabric, but for a patterned face fabric, the machine stitching lines will be less visible depending on the nature of the pattern.

A hand-made blind uses a skilful hand-sewn technique called “stab stitching”, with little stab stitches every 10cms or so along the line of the rod pockets to attach the lining through to the face. The visibility of the stab stitches on the front of the blind will depend on the type of face fabric – they can often be virtually invisible – and they are far superior finish compared to a line of machine stitching. This is the bespoke, hand-made look.

Bonded interlining or Separate Interlining?

A Roman Blind with bonded interlining is made with two layers of fabric, whereas a Blind with separate interlining has three layers of fabric.

The three layers for a Blind with separate interlining are the face fabric, the lining fabric, and in between the two is the fleecy layer of interlining.

A bonded interlining is simply a lining fabric and an interlining fused together, so a Roman Blind made with a bonded interlining has two layers, the face fabric and the bonded interlining.

The photograph shows a bonded blackout lining at the rear with a separate blackout lining and interlining at the front.
The fleecy layer of a separate interlining gives a Roman Blind that very plush, luxurious, look and feel. This is the hand-made, bespoke, high-quality look which sets an interlined blind apart. The extra layer also helps with insulation too. The lining can either be standard or blackout.

A bonded interlining is well worth considering, particularly if your face fabric is quite heavy, as the bonded interlining is nearly as thick as separate layers of lining and standard interlining.
A thinner face fabric, a light cotton print for example, would benefit more from a separate interlining, particularly as then there is also the choice of using a thicker interlining, perhaps a cotton domette for example.
