Made to Measure Roman Blinds – Linings

Bonded interlining or Separate interlining?

This is always a topic for discussion with our clients when we make Roman Blinds.

It’s important to explain the difference between the two and demonstrate the options using samples of linings and interlinings. We also take two demonstration Roman Blinds to show to clients, one with bonded lining and one with separate interlining.

We usually then say choose the face fabric first, before deciding on linings.

A Roman Blind with separate interlining has three layers of fabric; the face fabric, the lining fabric and the interlining. The lining fabric can either be standard lining or blackout lining. The interlining is the fleecy fabric which goes between the face fabric and the lining. This fleecy layer gives a Roman Blind that plush, luxurious, look and feel. This is the hand-made, bespoke, high-quality look which sets an interlined blind apart. The extra layer also helps with insulation too.

A bonded interlining is simply a lining fabric and interlining fused together. The photograph below shows a bonded blackout lining at the rear alongside separate blackout lining and interlining at the front. The bonded blackout interlining is not far short of the same thickness as the two separate linings. It is an option well worth considering as there is a cost saving between the two.

If your face fabric is a thicker/heavier fabric, then a bonded interlining can be a good choice as the two together can be enough to give that luxurious look and feel. Whereas a thinner face fabric, a thin cotton print for example, would benefit more from a separate interlining, particularly as then there is also the choice of using a thicker interlining, perhaps a cotton domette for example.

To give you an idea of the variation in fabric and lining weights; a light cotton print might start at around 200 grams per square metre, a more substantial cotton/linen mix might be around 350-400 gsm and a beautiful luxury weave perhaps 550 gsm. The photograph above is a stunning Jane Churchill weave made into a highly luxurious Roman Blind using a bonded blackout interlining. The Blackout lining fabric we use is 260 gsm and the normal interlining we use for blinds is 220 gsm.

We are always keen to show all the options and advise, that’s the bespoke service we offer.
